Weight-loss surgery in Stirling

Private Weight Loss Surgery at The Kings Park Hospital in Stirling.

At The Kings Park Hospital in Stirling, we offer weight loss consultations with highly skilled and experienced Consultant General Bariatric (Weight Loss) Surgeons. Their goal is to help you lose excess body weight and ease medical conditions associated with weight gain, such as diabetes and sleep apnoea.

Your weight loss consultant will see you for consultations at our friendly weight loss clinic in Kings Park Hospital. The same consultant will carry out any surgery at our sister hospital, The Ross Hall Hospital in Glasgow.

At The Ross Hall Hospital, excellent specialist nurses and dieticians will care for you at every step. Led by your consultant, we will find the best weight-loss solution to fit your needs.

Weight loss surgery includes various procedures designed to reduce body fat in people with a high body mass index (BMI). Our weight loss options are suitable for patients with a BMI of 35 and over and include:

  • Gastric band
  • Gastric balloon
  • Gastric bypass
  • Sleeve gastrectomy

You can expect outstanding weight loss treatment from experts who understand the reasons behind weight gain and care for you every step of the way.

It’s easy to book a consultation with our weight loss specialists online or by phone. A referral isn’t necessary. When you arrive, your weight loss consultant will come and greet you and take you to a consulting room.

There’s no rush. You’ll have plenty of time at the appointment to talk about the background to your eating. They’ll ask you how you became overweight, the diets you’ve tried, any successes at losing weight, portion control, types of food and food choices, so your consultant can work out the underlying issue and, if necessary, plan for surgical intervention.

They’ll also check your height, weight, and BMI. If you have a history of eating disorders, your consultant may refer you to a private psychologist.

If your body weight is under 35 BMI, your consultant may arrange for you to see a dietician at The Ross Hall Hospital for weight loss advice or to discuss a gastric balloon. If your BMI is over 35, there are surgical options.

Your consultant will email your details to a specialist nurse who will book you in for an appointment at The Ross Hall Hospital for surgery. They’ll make two appointments for you with the dietician. Assuming there are no issues, we can book surgery 4-6 weeks after the initial consultation.

For gastric band operations, your BMI must be over 40, or you have a BMI over 35 plus associated medical conditions such as diabetes, blood pressure, osteoarthritis, and mobility issues.

If your BMI is lower than 35, a gastric balloon may be an option. It’s a short-term, 6 to 12 month weight loss measure either for cosmetic weight loss or as a bridge to surgery in patients with a greater than 35 BMI.

A sleeve gastrectomy is a minimally invasive keyhole surgery where two-thirds of the stomach is stapled off to reduce its capacity.

Our Weight Loss Clinic draws people from all over Scotland, giving you fast access to outstanding treatments.

We make weight loss procedures as easy and as comfortable as possible, giving you all the support you need to make your treatment a success.

The same consultant you see for your initial consultation at The Kings Park Hospital will also do the surgery at The Ross Hall Hospital.

After your gastric band and/or gastrectomy operations, we’ll make you feel comfortable at The Ross Hall Hospital, where you’ll stay for 1-2 nights in a comfortable en-suite private room before being discharged home. Gastric balloon surgery is done as a day case.

Patients can lose half their excess body weight and more if they have surgery, together with appropriate food choices and exercise.

In any case, your consultant will ask you to lose 1-2 stone (6-10kg) in weight between your initial consultation and the date of your surgery. The weight loss is to make the liver shrink, which is necessary for surgery and demonstrates your commitment to the process.

With a gastric sleeve, some patients can lose up to two stone within two months of the operation.

After weight loss surgery, care includes supporting you for 18 months, making sure you have the multivitamins and nutritional supplements you need, checking your blood levels (every six months), and giving you access to a specialist nurse, dietician, and consultant.
